PREPARATORY WORK
All surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and properly cured prior to the application of a primer and coating, Surface contaminants such as dust, dirt, mildew, form oils and laitance must be thoroughly removed. Painted surfaces exhibiting loose, flaking or oxidized paint surfaces must be thoroughly removed by sand blasting, water blasting, electric sanding or wire brushing as required by the manufacturer. All surfaces must be primed prior to coating substrates.Large cracks, holes or voids must be filled with cement patching compound with Tex-Bond Cement Adhesive. Patching compound finish texture to match existing adjacent finish surfaces. Cracks over 1/16" (1.6 m) and less than 1/8" (3.2 mm) of an inch should be filled with FlexPatch Patching Compound. Interfacing of wall joints must be sealed with a urethane type sealant.
Metals
A detailed technical data sheet on surface preparation, degreasing and etching is available for all applications on metal surfaces. Consult a local TEXCOTE® representative prior to commencing application on metals.A sample wall is recommended for field approval by the architect, manufacturer's representative and contractor.
APPLICATION PRECAUTIONS
Apply TEXCOTE® Textured Coatings only under the following conditions:
- Roof and parapet top caps are installed and sealed against water penetration.
- Primer exposed to ultraviolet rays for more than 4 weeks requires repriming.
- Joint sealants have cured minimum of 48 hours.
- Retaining walls, planter boxes and similar construction are dampproofed on the soil side.
- Rain is not imminent and surfaces are not damp or frozen. Avoid freezing product.
- Surface and ambient air temperature range is 45° - 100°F (7° - 38°C).
This product, when still in liquid form, contains petroleum distillate, which will cause serious illness or death if swallowed or if large quantities are absorbed into body. Use in well ventilated areas. Use approved respirator in poorly ventilated areas. Keep liquid product away from heat sources and children. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call physician at once.
ROLL ON APPLICATION METHODS
Equipment, Roll-On - Short, medium or long nap rollers may be used for standard applications, depending on texture desired. With fully loaded roller, apply first coat at approximately
90 - 100 sf/gal (2.2 - 2.5 m2/L).
Allow 24 hour curing. Apply second coat at approximately
90 - 100 sf/gal (2.2 - 2.5 m2/L) to achieve a pinhole-free continuous film. When rolling, apply first with vertical strokes, then cross roll for even film and desired appearance.SPRAYED ON APPLICATION METHODS
Equipment, Sprayed On - Provide spray equipment similar to Graco President, 10:1 pump or Graco GM1030 and Graco 204-000 Spray Gun.A TEXCOTE® spray application manual is available upon request.
Installer must comply with the following:
- Application of TEXCOTE® must be at uniform pinhole free continuous film thickness over the entire surface.
- Maintain a wet edge at all times to prevent lap marks. Avoid starting and stopping midway on the wall surface. Continue spraying to a natural break point such as a panel edge, seam or corner.
- For large surface areas, two people spraying simultaneously are recommended to avoid lap marks and spray patterns. To achieve a proper surface, request the assistance of the manufacturer's representative.
- Apply coating at a rate of 30 - 50 sf/gal (0.7 - 1.2 m2/L) depending upon the porosity of the substrate and finish texture desired. A minimum of 15 - 17 mils (0.38 - 0.43 mm) dry film thickness is required. Consult the manufacturer for standard textures and specific texture coverage rates and samples.
Lace Texture Finish - The lace coat may be applied approximately 24 hours after the base coat, under ideal weather conditions. Comply with the following:
- Reduce air pressure on pump, creating an irregular splatter pattern.
- Using a square texturing tool, wipe splatters down creating an embossed lace pattern.
- Coverage rate for lace pattern is 40 - 67 sf/gal (0.98 - 1.64 m2/L).
CLEAN UP
Use mineral spirits for cleaning wet material. Use Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) to remove dry material. Attempt sample in concealed area first.SHELF LIFE
- Twelve month shelf life under proper conditions
- Containers must be stored upright and airtight in a dry place.
- Maintain air temperature of 45°F - 100°F (7°C - 38°C)
- Skins formed on surface of material must be removed prior to moving containers or mixing.
